The idea of this new mix, was born a few days ago. When it came to my house, the UPS driver handed me a package containing some vinyl.
Inside the pack, there were some records that I bought a few days before from Discogs, and among them was a 7" inch vinyl of Umberto Lenzi, a disc that was given to me by the dealer, and from this vinyl the mix was born. From a little joke, a bit for fun. This is a mix for you!

For some they may be not only genres, but stories and processes that are unfolded and reshaped by modern synth creators, lovers and followers of these sounds. This genre can be characterized by dark and moody tones. It has a bleak stripped down sound, with instrumentation consisting generally of raw analog synths, a pulsating drum beat, and cold vocals. This music without the vocals can be also referred to as minimal electronics.

If you have been following the cold/minimal wave retro-virus of recent years, its likely you have run across Medical Records. This label has been responsible for re-issuing classics like Deutsche Wertarbeit s/t (originally on SKY), seminal Italian new wave Chrisma, prime Neue Deutsche Welle act Der Plan and many more. The label always delivers excellent packaging and solid 180 gram vinyl - sometimes colored!
[sqwelsch] got in contact with Dr. Troy who operates Medical Records. What follows is a brief interview, full discography and a special one of a kind Medical Records music mix...

[sqwelsch]: What is Medical Records?

Dr. Troy of Medical Records: Medical Records is a label concept that is the realization of Dr. Troy as an outlet to make available lost and unavailable synth/wave/minimal/italo classics.

[sqwelsch]: How did you get started?

Dr. Troy: The idea came about about 6-7 years ago. I was becoming frustrated by the unavailability of many of my favorite synth and new wave records of the late 70s/early 80s. At that time, it seemed very expensive (and is ridiculously worse now) to buy out of print LPs on Ebay and on the collector’s market. I was frankly tired of owning only poorly encoded digital files of most of these classics. As I realized that other similar labels were successfully reissuing these records, I realized that I could participate and work on reissuing my personal favorites.
My goal with this label is and always will be to present music that has touched me in some way. I hope that I will be able to accomplish two (2) goals. 1) I want to make available amazing out of print synth records and present them in a high quality, tasteful, and exciting format (180 gram, colored vinyl) with interesting artwork to accompany them. 2) I hope fans like myself who are constantly hungry for new (old) music will have a trusted label they can turn to. I want to have a consistently interesting catalog that will urge people to check out the always upcoming releases sometimes without having any knowledge of the artist. I hope people will recognize the sound and vision of Medical Records. There is nothing more exciting that buying a record without ever having heard it and falling in love with the music within!

[sqwelsch]: Tell me more about the Medical Records "sound"?

Dr. Troy: The Medical Sound is both narrow and wide. It encompasses stripped down new wave, krautrock synth odysseys, quirky kosmische, and cosmic/italo dancefloor burners.

[sqwelsch]: We here at [sqwelsch] love talking about our favorite music. Please tell us about a few artists/records that have inspired you and your Medical Records imprint.

Dr. Troy: My favorite bands and records of all time were created by Brian Eno (70s/80s) and Kraftwerk (ALL). Specifically, my favorite New Wave record is Human League “Travelogue”. That record is a revelation. Completely perfect in all of its unusual and uncomfortable glory. From a disco standpoint, my personal favorites are Sun La Shan “Catch” (dub version) and Charlie “Spacer Woman”.

[sqwelsch]: What does Medical Records have planned for the future? Is the prognosis good?

Dr. Troy: You can expect more long sought after reissues. The palette continues to evolve. The latest release is Lou Champagne System “No Visible Means”. Records on the horizon include the criminally unavailable "Dalek I" record. Next after those amazing discoveries will be the Axxess record and many more.

The people who like youtubing for music have probably more than once come across the awesome 0x51d's Channel - a carefully chosen collection of vinyl music brought to you by DJ Zyron (Johan Åstrand).
I really enjoy his mixes as well, they are superbly mixed, with lots of love and respect for the music he plays - space disco, new wave, funk, prog rock... He has agreed to make a beautiful mix for our lovely blog so today we give you "Stay Calm, It Works!" And believe me - it really does. It was a time where to make a porn film was a serious thing. Particular care was given to all the details to make a film really exciting for the viewers. A movie where it is not only a question of performances and sizes.
A story where the actors were often dressed before taking action. Unthinkable today. We try here with this compilation to celebrates that period of erotic porn eXcellence's with the most representative cuts from that era. From the "uncredited" muzak choosing by Gerard Damiano for the opening scene of Deep Throat with Linda Lovelace to the original score created by the US latino punk band The Plugz for New Wave Hookers (appears for the first time here and right now).

You'll also hear some film music away from their original destinations like this track of Isaac Hayes originally composed for the blaxploitation classic "Truck Turner" or Alan Tew's score of the 70's British TV series "The Hanged Man" using in "The Satisfiers Of Alpha Blue" and also in "Wanda Whips Wall Street". Some disco tracks using many times in the second part of the seventies. Of course, few beautiful and original soundtracks especially composed for the films Cafe Flesh [Mitchel Froom], The Devil In Miss Jones [Alden Shuman] and among some others the legendary music composed by Roger Hamilton Spotts for Tongue the first blaXploitation porn film in 1976. Finally some famous songs complete the set. Like that cover of Johnny Cash remodeled by Wall Of Voodoo amazingly used in NightDreams. And some original songs like this one recorded and sung by the famous Marilyn Chambers herself in 1980 for Insatiable.

Neuromance

DJG here. I have a short portion of a DJ set done on February 26, 2011. Myself and Brian Bishop, a fellow DJ & electronic music specialist, set out for the stars on this date live from Pastime Tavern in Dallas, Texas. The guiding aesthetic theme was "retro-futurism".
The music included all things "cosmic" (i.e. space disco, italo, electro & classic synthscapes). We were also looking to give hommage to Salvatore Cusato (Casco) who recently passed away. The recording of this set began at the beginning of the night, but unfortunately, something happened & the last half of our set was not documented... Down here in Texas, we get a bit wild. I'm sure somebody's dancing boot spur got caught in the cable and it got yanked out from the mixer ;)

Ex Yu Wave

Hello again and welcome in a world of Ex Yu sounds! We came to the end of journey through Ex Yu flavours and for big finale we prepared exciting compilation as a prequel of previous Synth compilations we made. This one is filled with demos and tunes of early 80s...
... combining different directions and creating complex image of music events of that period. Like in a rest of Europe, begining of 80s bring many cultural changes and important events like New Wave that made good ground for events that came after it. In Yugoslavia that was Yu Wave, movement of various cultural events trhough 80s that emerged from New Wave. New Wave lasted short (started in the end of 70s and ended already during 1980. year) but it was very socialy accepted and had huge impact on culture, big media support and support of authorities contrary to lyrics that were criticizing regime. It was closely related with Yugoslav Punk Scene and in legacy left definition of New Wave as Golden Age of pop and rock scene and as a proof of success there were notable compilations like Novi Pank Val, Paket Aranžman, Artistička Radna Akcija, Svi Marš Na Ples! and Vrući Dani i Vrele Noći.

Movement stopped in 1980. year together with Rokenroler show (main media promoter of new wave) which was now replaced by more attractive show Hit Meseca (Hit of The Month, Yugoslav version of Top Of The Pops). Different media times came promoting new ways in culture and music emerged from new wave, unconsciously supporting creation of new cultural phenomen recognised now as Yu Wave. It was period of new directions, new styles and technological novelties. Realisation of new ideas started with one of the most controversial performances from begining of 80s made by 'father' of pop image and style, Oliver Mandić, who's presented as a solo artist for first time in an avantgarde show Belgrade At Night which main subject was promotion of videos for newcoming albums. Public was shocked with Oliver's transvestite performances but show and videos claimed huge succeses and got published on VHS.

Big media supporter of new coming scene was also Ventilator 202, radio show broadcasting on radio Beograd 202. It was notable for its promotion of local demo music (Demo top 10 Ventilator 202, 3 compilations in period 1983-85), early application of computers and introduction of "absolute radio" concept.

Also cinema played important role as a reflector of popular culture documenting events like transition of cultures and integrating music scene in it's opus. One of the films that on the best way presents atmosphere of Titoism and new wave is Dečko Koji Obećava (1981, known as 'The Promising Boy' with appearance of Dušan Kojić Koja from Šarlo Akrobata). Yu Wave representers are films like Davitelj Protiv Davitelja (1984, known as 'Strangler vs. Strangler' with appearance of Srđan Šaper from Idoli), Šećerna Vodica (1983, music by Via Talas), Crna Marija (1986, known as Black Marija) considered as Yu Trash (appearance of Milan Mladenović from EKV) and others.

Looking from present moment it is possible to consider one whole decade of various events as some kind of wave cause it was so brutaly interrupted, finished and burried in the begining of 90s with secession of Yugoslavia and events that came after it. But while lasting it put inside many different music genres (Post Punk, Art Rock, Synth Pop, New Romantic, Neue Slowenische Kunst, Neo-Rockabilly) making scene flourish for almost a decade!

In Ex Yu Wave compilation we collected our favourite classics and demos emerged from New Wave and it's ideology. Idea of this compilation was to present transition period between New Wave and popular culture combining sounds from both directions. With some names u meet again and with some this is first encounter like Klinička smrt. Antički Poroci of Klinička Smrt was never published anywhere. Track was recorded in 1982, Singer was Mirjana Blagojević and creator Dejan Novčić who played synthesizer, rythm machine, bass and synar and done complete music and arrangement. After some time on this project Dejan Novčić makes Oskarova Fobija, synth duo active in mid 80s. Oskarova Fobija will feature very soon on Synth compilation under Minimal Wave label and they plan release of 2 LPs of unreleased demos! Good times are coming for Ex Yu scene where she's finally recognised as important factor in history of music and what was completely forgoten starts to recive it's previous glow. We hope you agree with us and that this compilation will take you, once again, through exciting music journey of Ex Yu Sounds! Enjoy!

In the Belgium of the early 80's, Jack Mauer was a musical prolific producer. Working on different electro projects, he founded the Shiva studios and became famous when the New Beat music exploded. With the label Sound Of Belgium
... and productions like Code 61, Secret Code, BX-8017, Brainstorm, Noise Boys... Some stuffs he released before this new beat area are still obscure and lost on his releases storm... Like this track recorded in collaboration with Pascal Huwart (engineer working with Dan Lacksman), Patrick Cogneaux & Gus Roan (from The Veterans) on the Shiva studios in 1984 under the name of Robody. An old school electronic hip hop fantasy called Dr. Youwzy! Check the video!! Something like a mix between Herbie Hancock's "Rock It"(for the music) and a 80's Dark Bro porn productions! (for the video)..Belgium fleshdance! What a feeling!! ;)

Something incredible has caught my ear today. A true space disco gem from USSR by the name of ARGO (the full name of the bend is Electronic music group ARGO). It was formed by one of the greatest modern Lithuanian composers...
... Giedrius Kuprevicius who got interested in electronic music in the 70s. This is how he described it: "The predominance of electronics in the creative work of the group bears out our desire to master and artistically interpret the possibilities of modern musical instruments. We are the first who are entrusted with testing the Vilnius-5 model of a new electronic organ. We are sure of good prospects of the instrument". DISCOPHONY consists as if of two musical layers: disco-intended for entertainment and based on dance rhythms, and -phony-music for listening with predominating, electronic sound". The vocal part is interpreted in an instrumental way. Julius Vilnonis, the leader of the ARGO group, makes his debut with one of the compositions (A3). Enjoy this simply magnificent piece of music. Hope you like it as much as we do!

Here's something for the horror-disco lover in all of us. I bought this from Danny Wolfers in Austin, TX in early 2005. TLR, Speculator, Orgue Electronique and of course, Legowelt were on the Creme Organization/ Bunker USA tour.
He told me that this was a "lost" sound track to a 1983 Italian horror film that was never released. That intrigued me enough to buy it without listening. It was too good to be true (I am not sure it actually is! ) This record would not sound out of place in a Carpenter or Fulci film of that era. The 12" release is still available through Juno Records. Enjoy this slow-mo treat just in time for Halloween! -DJG

Cosmic Messenger revisited

I slept on Jean-Luc Ponty for awhile. You see so many of his records in used bins here the states, it gets daunting. In light of the "cosmic" revival of the last few years, I feel its time to look a little closer at the magic of JLP.

He came up in the post-Bop era of jazz, playing with such luminaries as Frank Zappa & George Duke (a favorite of mine!) yet is best known for what is generally categorized as fusion. Combining technology & electronics with jazz, just as Miles Davis, the electro-jazz pioneer before him, JLP took it to another level incorporating analogue synthesizers & drum machines on his own solo releases. I liken JLP to Manuel Gӧttsching with the use of arpeggiated sequencers driving the rhythm along with their instrument of choice. As an electric violin player, he augments this with echo & effects tastefully only to enhance the music, never just for the sake of it. Ponty still continues to make music & tour today. I hear his mechanical rhythms as a direct influence on the second wave of Detroit Techno, particularly Kenny Larkin & Carl Craig. (Stacey Pullen has even recorded under the moniker "Kosmic Messenger" - an obvious nod to JLP). I am sharing just a few selections, notably from the late 70s to the late 80s out of his vast body of work that spans 5 decades. My choices mainly feature JLP w/ synth accompaniment. These are my stand-out favorites. (I encourage you to seek out the full lengths!) With fantastic titles such as "Enigmatic Ocean", "Echoes of the Future" and "Mirage", Ponty was always pointing to something deeper. From this world, yet beyond it.

"Computer Incantations for World Peace" from INDIVIDUAL CHOICE (1983).
JLP's own "mini E2-E4". Epic.

"Intuition" from OPEN MIND (1984).
Liner notes say "rhythm computer", but it sounds like a Linn to me.
Check the synth bassline on this introspective one.

"Plastic Idols" from FABLES (1985)
Slower one here with some creative delays on the pizzicatos.

"Metamorphosis" from GIFT OF TIME (1987)
spacey blips & beeps with a little fusion-y bass & drums.

Here the link to the video for "Individual Choice" produced by Louis Schwarzberg. Very reminicent of Koyaanisqatsi. Evidently, next to "Rockit" this was one of the first videos for a jazz musician.

Darktown Strutters is not just the name of a cult 70s blaxploitation movie. It's the musical project between Kara Howell and Wes Darrin started a couple of years ago in Dallas, Texas. We listened it a lot, we loved it...
... and after some time of streight thinking and trying to define their music or at least establish musical roots of it, we give ourselfs to pure association and reflection of what we hear - deep inside back of our conciousness was unidentified memory of late 70s and early 80s lost underground when puppet porn cabarets seemed as perfect expression of sexual tendencies that lead into new wave porns and new forms of B movies. My passions & expertise are in Underground American disco, Smooth jazz-funk/fusion, Classic Chicago house & NYC proto-house music, Deep techno from Detroit to Europa, 80's new wave/retro, Post-punk/darkwave synth and the Cosmic/Balearic flavors we all love to discover. As I prepare a special mix for everyone, I want to share a little track along with my first post for [Sqwelsch]. Nothing too rare...just a personal favorite "It's You" by E.S.P. This is a classic Chicago house track on Underground Records from 1986. When I hear this, I imagine it pounding in the pitch black recesses of The Music Box as it was played by DJ Ron Hardy, probably on the original reel to reel tape....I imagine a crowd of young, black disco punks jackin' their bodies, losing control, too far gone. This song was probably made in someone's bedroom in the mid 80s....I imagine the two or three pieces of equipment sprawled out on the bed as the creator kneels on the floor at the controls....He transfers a great passion into a stripped down fantasy. THE TRACK: the thunderous, rolling baseline....the tense, floating synth strings...AND THAT MELODY. That stark, unforgettable melody that beeps like a beautifully programmed nightmare going off in your head. Then a break....swirling backwards voices hinting at some trapped nether regions of the song. This track is a desire. Calling the object like a mantra, "it's you ...it's you I want tonight..." Feel the Heat.

The Beautiful Swimmers return! DJs Andrew Field-Pickering and Ari Goldman, known collectively as Beautiful Swimmers are about to have their new release (June, 2010.) which will be available from local dance Future Times. So far, they have been known for their first 12” record “Swimmers Groove” b/w “O Yeah”. With its sampled call-and-response vocals, its sequenced synths, and its lake of gated reverb, it’s pretty decadent. Sort of like Brian Eno scoring a Michael Mann film, if that makes any sense at all. In the meantime, this music video for “O Yeah” should give you a pretty good idea of the record’s sub-aquatic-kraut-rock vibe.

Romanticne Boje were a synth-pop band from Nis, a town in the South of Serbia (ex Yugoslavia). They started as a punk band, and then, out of the blue, Zoran Cvetkovic Cvele, who had played the guitar, bought a Casio synthesizer and a new band was formed...

...a young, dynamic and energetic trio. Their first gig happened in The Music Club (the most famous club of the time), and after that they recorded their first demo tapes “Noc (The Night)” and “Poslednji Tango (The Last Tango)” in the studio of Radio Nis. The demos were constantly played on the radio, and the audience was thrilled by the freshness of their sound. The band was not completely satisfied by it, so they bought better synths and soon their music became more refined and sophisticated. They received some great reviews from the music critics of the time and decided it was the time for a proper vinyl release. Everyone loved them, their tracks were played regularly on radio stations, and they even made a video for “Tisina (The Silence)”. However, PGP RTB, the most important record label of the time, didn’t want to release their album, so Cvele got very disappointed and the band unfortunately ceased to exist. Their major influences were The Human League, Kraftwerk and John Foxx, but they cannot be denied the originality of sound. Band members: Zoran Cvetkovic - synthesizer, Goran Radenkovic - synthesizer, Goran Veljkovic - rhythm machine.

Stones Throw planned to release an amazing anthology "The Minimal Wave Tapes" in January - a collection of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970's and 80's. The founder of the Minimal Wave record label Veronica Vasicka put together this 40-minute mix which includes a couple tracks by artists who are on the anthology...Download it here

The most important identifying feature of the scene was the development of a personal style, because you couldn’t buy such a thing in GDR times. In this nether world, you had to create your individual image. This film tells of the longing, passions and dreams which were tested, experienced and lived out in the shadow of the Wall.
